deconstruction of short film

when classing this into a genre it cannot be placed directly into one category instead it needs to be placed in several, i personally fell that it is a drama and a romance(even if it is a failed one) the genre is made clear by the use of lighting and filters on the shots. This is because they are dark with a faded sepia filter this gives of dull depressive tones that would come with a drama and also the mood that would come with a break up story.

The narrative has been done well using a narrator to tell the story, in this case the narrator is presented as being the protaganist from a 3rd person perspective who talks about his relationship and discusses he note he left to his ex girlfriend. however if we were to look at the story with hind-sight  it could be argues that instead the ballon is the narrator acessing the note giving a 3rd persone perspective on our protaganist. The narrative itself again can be viewed in two ways the first being: the protaganist is disucussing his break up and reading the note he has left to his ex girlfriend, he then sees the ballon and it is a metaphor for his relationship and how no matter how much he reachs to achieve it, it will always fly away and eventually this dream of a perfect relationship is realised to be un achievable which is shown by the balloon popping. the second interpritation is that the ballon is accessing the mans life and the high angle shots show this as they represent the ballon and how it is a outside opinion accessing what he has done the scene on the beach then shows how the idea of leaving a note to break up with someone means that they can never come to terms with what has happened you see this when the ballon moves away because it is as if the ballon is trying to tell him that no mattr hoe much he wants this note to be the right thing to do it will always result ina negative conclusion this is why it pops because it realises that it his mistake to make and noone else can make the decision. thr man then screws up the paper because he realises that to right a note means that it will never be over

things to think about when making my film

Title Sequence: I  need to think about what i would use within my title sequence as it is important in setting the tone for everything else that is going to be included. I need to think about what the title of the film is going to be, the colour and tone of the sequence, the use of sound (whether it is ambient music or artificial music), the use of editing to compose thright atmosphere and mood, setting the scene with an opening shot that will effect the entire film.

Narrative: The idea of a short film is that it is short this means that the narrative must be effective and short, writing from experience will assist in making the narrative flow as it provides a story that is closer to reality. Ensure to re write the narrative over and over to ensure that the narrative is effective and suits it's purpose. Ensure to keep the story line as close to real life as possible this engages the audience more as they are able to take aspects of it and compare it to their life or conventions they may already have about real life. When thinking about narrative it is also important to make a genre for it, this is because all successful films are able to be sorted into a genre, e.g. star wars can be put into sci fi.

Planning: When thinking about how i will plan the video i will need to use various different techniques. First to generate mood boards to generate thoughts about what it is i want to make my video about, also narrative of the video, the location of the video, the lighting, the hardware i will use, what software i will use to edit the video etc.

video ideas

When thinking about which brief i would choose i started to look at music videos, i found this music video (After Midnight Blink 182) and i like the narrative that goes with the music along with the how it has been made. I like the use of narrative within the music video as it is almost like watching a short film with the two protagonists being the patients in the psychiatric institue that get out of their rooms and cause havoc within a hospital. With the antagonists being the wardens of the hospitals, this makes the video follow the normal conventions that we would perceive in a narrative but are presenting it in a different way. This is because instead of being a knight saving a princess, it is instead 2 patients. This video also makes us question stereotypes we already have about those in psychiatric wards, as we would think that they are all mostly mentally unstable and not safe but this shows how they are the same as anyone else. They have conformed however to the stereotypes used in a rock music video this is the use of the band performing their song inside a big hanger and they have assumed stances that a typically rockstar would. I like the idea (if i was to make a music video) to insert a narrative into the music video, almost making the music video a short film in it's self. However this could be difficult as it may turn more into a short film retracting from the fact that it is a music video but i enjoy this style of music video and feel that it is a possible option if i was to make a music video.
